charley barnes - Honor Flight 1 (Greeley, Colorado)
Charley was born on April 15, 1963 in Alamogordo, New Mexico to William and Kay Barnes. Charley's Father, a World War II veteran and graduate of the Naval Academy (Class of '46) was working at the White Sands Missile Range when Charley was born which may explain why Charley is not wired quite right. Charley lived all over the country including Great Falls, West Virginia, Colorado Springs and attended Junior High and High School in La Junta before moving to Alaska at the age of 18.
Starting in radio at the age of 15, he spent the next 37 years in a career that would take him all across the country before moving back to Colorado in 1998 to raise his family and spending the last 18 years of his career working at K99 in Northern Colorado. He has three beautiful kids; Taylor who is now 21 and a Senior at the University of Northern Colorado, Mason who graduated from Greeley West in 2014 and will be enrolling at the University of Colorado in 2016 and his youngest Cade, who is a Junior at Greeley West.
Charley, over the years, has done much for his community when it comes to charity and started the Sleigh Riders Motorcycle Toy Run in 2006 which is a 501c3 charity and the largest single contributor to the Santa Cops of Weld County program which has helped about 4000 families over the years. He has also done years of charity work for many military functions including American Military Family, The Combat Veterans Association, local VFW's, American Legions and more, but none bigger than Honor Flight Northern Colorado raising about $100,000 from April of 2014 to June of 2015.
His passion for extreme endurance motorcycle riding is well documented and has many certified Iron Butt rides to his name including the Saddlesore (1000 miles in under 24-hours), Bun Burner (1500 miles in under 36-hours), SS2000 (2000 miles in under 48-hours), Bun Burner Gold (1500 miles in under 24 hours/extreme), Border to Border Insanity (Inside Canada to Inside Mexico in under 24-hours/extreme - he did it in 21), Coast to Coast/San Diego CA to Jacksonville FL (Under 50 hours-he did it in 46)...and the last two he did at the same time during his first attempt at the 10-10ths in 2014.
Charley and Mike were first acquainted in June, 2012 through Mike's wife Diane who works for the Suhre Law firm which has done a lot for Charley's charity work over the years. It was Diane who actually thought the two should meet saying "you guys are two peas in a pod." She was right and the two have been inseparable ever since. Charley and Mike both agree it's kind of nice because they can do about anything and Diane can't say much about it since this friendship was her fault to begin with so rides that end at 2AM (and beyond) have been the norm.
After 37 years in radio, Charley called it quits in August of 2015 and pursue his dream of driving a semi and now hauls crude oil for Colorado Crude Carriers.
